From Breakdown Call to Drilling Again in Under 48 Hours.

When a drill loses rotation, production stops with it. A client in Port Hedland called Drillspec after a rig went down with a loss-of-rotation fault. The repair was completed and the rig was back up and spinning within 48 hours of that first phone call.

The turnaround came from getting the diagnosis right before the field-service vehicle left. A Drillspec exploration specialist talked the client's crew through a series of checks over the phone, traced the fault to a failed rotation pump and mobilised with the correct replacement.

Diagnosis before mobilisation

A rushed callout can waste valuable hours if the technician arrives without the right component or without a clear fault path. In this case, the initial phone support narrowed the problem before anyone hit the road.

The client's crew carried out the requested tests while the Drillspec specialist worked through the symptoms with them. The evidence pointed to the rotation pump, giving the team a specific repair plan rather than a general breakdown response.

The right part on the first trip

With the fault identified, Drillspec collected a replacement pump from the client's warehouse and loaded it onto DM15. The field-service ute then headed north to Port Hedland with the major component already on board.

That preparation mattered. It removed the need for a second mobilisation and kept the job moving from diagnosis to installation without waiting for another parts run.

Old pump out and new pump in

On site, the failed rotation pump was removed and the replacement was fitted. The hydraulic lines and manifold were reconnected, and the system was checked before the rig returned to work.

From the client's first call to the rig drilling again, the full response took less than 48 hours. The result was one diagnosis, one mobilisation and one completed repair.

Why the first conversation matters

Fast breakdown support depends on more than driving quickly. It starts with an experienced technician asking the right questions, helping the site team run useful checks and turning that information into a practical mobilisation plan.

Drillspec's field-service crews support exploration and production drilling operations across the Pilbara and Goldfields. The aim on every callout is straightforward: understand the fault, mobilise with purpose and reduce the time between the breakdown call and the rig making metres again.
